The Green Corner

The Three Rs
by Grace Wang

Hello everyone and welcome to the first edition of our newest section, the Green Corner! Do you know the 3 R’s? They are reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Plastic and paper over consumption is a problem. Plastics don’t just disappear when we throw them away, so they go into the water, the land, and even into the air we breathe. It becomes pollution. On the other hand, while most types of paper decompose a bit faster, they do come from trees! The more paper we use, the fewer trees there will be. According to World Centric, a whole ⅔ of the United States’ paper comes from whole trees, plants, wood chips, and scraps, and only ⅓ of the paper comes from previously recycled paper. That’s why we should follow the big R’s, or it will cause severe damage to the environment.

The most popular of these three is the recycling part. Throw your recyclable things like paper and plastic into the recycling bin. It will turn your materials into a new product that people can use.

Another good way to help our planet look greener is reducing how much you use. Simply try to be more self conscious about what you are using, and how much you aren’t using. Try to use only what you need! This will help stop the problem before it starts.

Reusing things is one of my favorite ways to help the Earth. It allows you to help people around the world while also helping yourself and maybe even your school with some art or tools. Using some random popsicle sticks, cardboard boxes, or even a ripped sock can help you create art and especially your creativity. Having something specific, an everyday item, to create something beautiful and maybe even useful to use in your day at school to make things a little easier will give your mind a good prompt. In future articles, I will provide prompting ideas and some of my favorite crafts.

Overall, the 3 R’s are very important in keeping our planet healthy. So, next time you’re using something, keep them in mind!
