Want to Apply for the GP?

Each section is described below, but it is also important that you read the handbook linked below to see what other responsibilities you will have as a GP member. The handbook will have more information about due dates, dismissal of members, how the editing process will be carried out, etc. Please keep in mind that you can only apply if you are in Middle School. Previous Griffin Post members must reapply if they want to write for the GP.

Game Section
(1 opening)

In this section, the writer will be required to make interactive games/quizzes. The game should be different from the one published the week before.

Options include:

  • Sudoku

  • Buzzfeed Quizzes

  • Crossword Puzzle

  • Scavenger Hunts

  • Make a Game Yourself

The writer of this section will be given freedom to choose what games/quizzes to include (as long as they are school-appropriate), the options above are just suggestions.

Dear Griffin Post
(1 opening)

This section is like an advice column in which the writer will answer questions from students. However, it is important to note that this section is meant to answer questions about subjects that can be researched, not actual problems that students have. Students will be given a form to ask questions (once again, this means questions about history, science, music, etc., not questions about what to do in a real-life situation), and each edition the writer will work in collaboration with the editor to pick questions to answer. Then, those questions will be answered by the writer in the next edition. â€‹

All articles should be well researched (at least 3 different sources).

Sports
(1 opening)

The sports writer has a lot of freedom; they are allowed to write about any big sports news, such as a player trade or a new rule in a sports league. Additionally, they may write about big sports events or tournaments. They can also give updates on Detroit Sports or summarize important/eventful games across any sports teams. All articles should be well researched (at least 3 different sources).

Novel Notes
(4 openings)

"Novel Notes" writers will be expected to write a review every other edition. The writers will take turns so that only two writers publish every edition, and the other two writers have more time to write. This means that writers will receive a break every other edition.

Seasonal Topic
(1 opening)

The "Seasonal Topic" writer will be required to write about something going on this season. This can include activities to do during the season, holidays being celebrated soon, or anything else that is relevant to the coming weeks. All articles should be well researched (at least 3 different sources).

Five Interesting Facts About the World
(1 opening)

Come up with a theme and include five interesting facts that follow that theme. Make sure to include a picture for each fact. Each fact should have an elaboration (each explanation should be 60-180 so that the whole article is 300-900 words long). It is ok if some explanations are over 180 words, but no facts can be below 60 words. All articles should be well researched (at least 3 different sources).

This Day in History
(1 opening)

Writers  must write about an event in history that happened on the day of publication (or 1-4 days away from the day of publication). All articles should be well researched (at least 3 different sources).

Historical Figures: Visual Podcast
(2 openings)

The job of both podcast creators will be to work with each other to create a script for a podcast. The podcast will be about historical figures, both podcast creators cand decide together what figure to talk about (though each podcast should cover a different figure). After creating the script, the podcast creators must submit the script to be edited, and after modifications have been suggested, they will make edits to the script. Afterwards, they will record the podcast and resubmit the recorded visual podcast. Both partners must participate. That means that both podcast creators will have to talk to see when they can get together to record the podcast. For the final recording, both partners must appear on camera and speak for similar amounts of time. Each podcast should cover ONE historical figure so that the podcast can go in depth. The podcast should be well researched (at least 3 different sources).

Around the World with the Griffin Post
(1 opening)

Writers must write an article about a city/landmark around the world and why it is worth learning about. Writers must include basic facts such as creation/founding date, location, cause for creation (in the case of a landmark), and size. Writers are encouraged to write about other facts about the city/landmark, the ones above are just a way to get started. Each article should cover ONE city/landmark, and it should be different from any cities/landmarks written about before (in the same school year). All articles must be well researched (at least 3 different sources).
